Griffith Hack is very proud to continue its support of the annual Western Australian Innovator of the Year (WAIOTY) program, which held its official 2023 launch at the Perth Convention Centre on Tuesday 2 May.
The program, an initiative of the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI), acknowledges and rewards exceptional innovators in Western Australia who have developed an outstanding innovative product, technology, or service, which is at the emerging innovation or growth phase of development.
In 2023, the program has seen an increased prize pool of $220,000, to be shared across the available categories, with the overall Innovator of the Year winner to be awarded $100,000.
Griffith Hack is a long-standing supporter of the WAIOTY program, and is a gold sponsor in 2023.
Griffith Hack’s Perth team attended Tuesday’s launch event, where the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Western Australian Minister for Innovation and the Digital Economy officially opened the program for 2023. Also in attendance were WA Chief Scientist Professor Peter Klinken AC, Shadow Minister for Innovation and ICT Dr David Honey MLA, Rio Tinto Manager of Innovation Neil Freeman, and Linda Dawson, the Deputy Director General of Industry, Science and Innovation at JTSI.
Guests also heard from 2022 Innovator of the Year Overall Winner Kate Lewkowski and Minderoo Foundation Head of Indigenous Entrepreneurship Leslie Delaforce who spoke about the importance of nurturing innovation across the State.

About the program
- Applications are now open for the 2023 Western Australia Innovator of the Year program and close at 11am AWST on Friday 9 June 2023.
- The innovation must demonstrate an economic, social, or environmental benefit to Western Australia.
- It is intended that financial support will assist successful applicants to take a product, technology or service from its emerging innovation or growth phase of development to commercialisation.
- The WA Innovator of the Year 2023 program comprises of two categories:
- The Rio Tinto Emerging Innovation Category (pre-revenue) for applicants who have not
generated revenue for their innovation. - The Rio Tinto Growth Category (post-revenue) for applicants that have generated revenue
from their innovation.
